This interdisciplinary course provided an overview of the creation of a fashion editorial for a magazine. With a main focus on art direction, we were introduced to all the steps and aspects involved in a fashion editorial photo-story, from initial research and mood board construction to styling, photography and magazine. The course consisted of individual and collective projects to address the necessary skills for the conception of a fashion photo-story such as story telling, concept development and experimental styling.
The practice-based approach of the course was inspired and supported by various lectures covering topics such as: fashion media, surveys of key fashion photographers, stylists and art directors, genres of fashion editorials, significance of the fashion magazine and its role in contemporary culture.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Define the system and significance of fashion media
Define the elements and skills needed to create an editorial fashion shoot
Create a moodboard as a communication tool
Recognize the work of leading players in the history of fashion photography
Style and photograph an outfit as part of a team
Understand the significance of the fashion magazine as a major catalyst in the fashion industry
Create a simple layout for photo-stories in magazines utilizing InDesign software and understand the importance of design and typography in fashion magazine layouts

In the first week of class we were challenged to come up with and style a "parisian" photo shoot. I went for the classic black and white polka dots, pearls, and red lipstick.
Then we each described each others final photo using one word. Those words were then to be used as inspiration for the next photo shoot. My words included Sex & the City, spoiled, and Greek goddess. Which lead me to style this photo shoot. I styled my photo keeping in mind Carrie Bradshaw- I wore a skirt as a top and placed a belt over that. I carried shopping bags as a way of showing that I was spoiled. And finally, wearing a white bohemian dress and greek sandals in a older building with amazing columns- I portrayed the Greek portion of my assignment.
