DRAPING

After learning the draping basics and completing multiple exercises, we were assigned two projects. The first was a dress of your choice, and the second was an outerwear piece.

PROJECT 1

Vibrant Elegance

PROCESS

For this project, I wanted to do a two piece evening wear set. Using tools from previous draping exercises while in class, I attempted to create a high-low skirt with a lot of volume. Through trial and error,  I decided to go with a different approach...

FINAL FABRIC

Initially I draped the top in muslin and created a pattern, however I found that it was best to drape it in the original fabric. This structured drape creates fluid lines that is flattering and still classic. The contrast of the dark black sateen with the bold and colorful jersey skirt creates movement and balance within this design.

COMPLETED DESIGN

To finish my two piece evening dress I added a 2" black waistband in the same fabric as the top to make it clear that these two pieces go together. The contrast between the black and bold pattern allow the colors pop. To see more of the process, click through the gallery below

PROJECT 2

Coat Project

FABRIC SELECTION

When looking for fabric, I wanted to do something more light weight since I am going for more of a jacket coat for fall. I ended up with woven wool coating fabric and brown wool suiting to add more details.

PROCESS

To give this coat jacket a sporty feel I wanted to add a trimmed detail. Initially I planned to do this with the brown fabric, but after seeing it I realized I wanted to do something with more contrast. I had this light pink tweed on hand and decided to rip it into small strips to create the horizontal striped detailing. I am glad that I decided to add this because it makes it more cohesive and interesting.

FINAL PRODUCT

To complete my design I added lining and side seam pockets. I also added two fake buttons on each side of the jacket to give it that 60's look. Lastly, I added hook and eye closures next to the buttons to keep my coat functional.
